What Is a 3DM File?
A 3DM file is the native file format of Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino), the world's leading NURBS-based 3D modeling software. Unlike mesh-based formats, 3DM files store geometry as precise mathematical curves and surfaces (NURBS — Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines), which means they remain perfectly smooth at any scale. For jewelry designers, this precision is critical: a ring shank modeled at 0.01mm tolerance in a 3DM file will cast with the same precision in gold or platinum.
3DM vs STL: Key Differences for Jewelry Makers
- 3DM files store the full CAD model with editable geometry, parameters, layers, and materials. You can resize, restone, and modify the design after receiving the file.
- STL files are export meshes — a frozen snapshot of the geometry broken into triangles. STL files cannot be meaningfully edited in CAD, but they are required for 3D printing and casting.
Professional jewelry workflows typically start with a 3DM source file for editing, then export to STL for printing. Our library provides both formats so you can design and manufacture without restrictions.
Why Jewelers Prefer NURBS Over Mesh Geometry
NURBS surfaces produce mathematically perfect curves — essential for smooth ring shanks, prong transitions, and stone seats. Mesh-based formats (like those from Blender or ZBrush) create faceted approximations that can introduce surface irregularities visible after metal casting and polishing. For precision manufacturing, NURBS-based 3DM files are the professional standard.
Which Software Opens 3DM Files?
- Rhinoceros 3D (versions 5, 6, 7, 8) — the native application
- MatrixGold — built on Rhino, fully compatible
- CounterSketch Studio
- 3Design
- Autodesk Fusion 360 (import only)
